The Shades of Grey online exhibition is a digital replica of the Auckland City Libraries exhibition held between 16 September 2010 and 29 January 2011.
Curated by staff of the libraries’ Sir George Grey Special Collections – Iain Sharp, Kate de Courcy, Ian Snowdon, Robert Eruera and Georgia Prince – the exhibition focuses on Sir George, the man and his various facets as a politician, explorer, book lover and philanthropist. It explores aspects of Grey’s life, career and interests.
Shades of Grey Online is an exquisite visual experience for those who wish to view the exhibition from the comfort of their own homes or computers.
Created by the Digital Publishing team and designed by web publisher Ben Yuan, the online exhibition gives you the chance to inspect digitised versions of a selection of his gift to the library in 1887: books, letters, personal papers, sketches, maps and documents in magnified detail. For instance, you could zoom in to view a large high-quality image of the sketch of Kawiti's pa at Ruapekapeka.
The images are accompanied by text that sheds light on Grey’s diverse interests and the magnitude of his dealings.
