19th Century New Zealand
Grey lived in New Zealand for a large part of his life. He arrived in New Zealand for his first term as governor in 1845 and stayed for 8 years. After spending time as governor to the Cape Colony, he returned to New Zealand for another 7 years from 1861 till 1868. He returned for a final time in November 1869 and stayed until 1894, living the final four years of his life in Britain.
Collecting correspondence and publications created during his time in New Zealand, Grey’s collection is pivotal for research into the history of 19th century New Zealand.
