Rare Books: International
Sir George Grey began collecting rare books early in his career. His first library burned in the Auckland Government House fire in 1848 yet by 1861 he managed to donate a major collection of 5,000 books to South Africa. He then immediately started collecting again, creating a new collection which would eventually be gifted to the people of Auckland.
There are a number of duplicated works within these two gifted collections including Shakespeare’s First Folio and Caxton’s Polychronicon.
